Full course description State defense system – definition, main characteristics. Command and control subsystem of state defense system – main elements (president, government and prime minister, ministry of national defense, parliament, other), functions and role, structure, assessment; Polish strategic documents (National Security Strategies; National Defense Strategies) Polish Armed Forces – main function and tasks, evolution since 1989, structure and organization, budget, personnel, command structure, bases, equipment. Transformation of Polish armed forces – professionalization and technical modernization – current problem, future trends. International involvement of Polish armed forces (reasons and goals of engagement, peacekeeping and stabilization activities). Impact of membership in NATO on Polish defense policy and system (contingency planning, NATO investments and infrastructure in Poland, training and exercises) Non-military elements of defense system – diplomacy, border and coastal guards, police and other law enforcement agencies, intelligence, other, role and defense duties of non-governmental, private entities. Crisis management in Poland (main procedures and elements of crisis management system). Polish defense industry – evolution after 1989, structure and main factories and enterprises, strengths and weaknesses, involvement in international cooperation, future prospects. Role of security communities in Polish defense policy and system – main governmental advisory bodies, academia and research institutes, think-tanks, non-governmental associations and public organizations, assessment of their impact on defense policy. Defense systems of selected countries.

Learning outcomes
The student should know and understand the functions and structure of the state defense system, as well as the role and tasks of individual state bodies within it. He should also know and understand the basic assumptions of the Polish security and defense strategy, as well as the organization, tasks and principles of use and development of the armed forces. He should be able to analyze the basic conditions of state defense and formulate conclusions about the construction and development of the state defense system. Based on the acquired knowledge and skills, the student should be ready to participate in the practical design of the Polish defense system.

Assessment criteria
Credit for the course on the basis of: a) draft revision of selected strategic documents and written and oral verification of the selected defense assumption plus b) participation and activity in the strategic debate.
