– The notion of development: evolution and conceptualization of the term; key theoretical approaches
– The problem of the development gap and global inequalities
– From the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the contemporary dimension of the neoliberal development paradigm
– Challenges and limitations of the sustainable development concept
BLOCK 2: Institutional Dimension
– The role of contemporary international institutions (IGOs, NGOs) in achieving sustainable development goals
– The Global Compact initiative and its significance for promoting the idea of sustainability
– Indicators of sustainable development: Genuine Savings, ISEW, GPI, Ecological Footprint, HANPP
BLOCK 3: Substantive Dimension
– Sustainable development in state policies
– Implementation of sustainable development in the strategies and activities of international organizations
– The European Green Deal
– Mechanisms and architecture of development financing
– Innovative financial instruments
– The role of multilateral development banks and the private sector in financing the SDGs
– The “Maximizing Finance for Development” initiative

Assessment criteria
Assessment Criteria
90%
Completion and presentation of a group assignment addressing a specific problem related to sustainable development.
Topics and formats of the assignments may vary depending on the edition of the course. Details will be discussed and consulted with the group at the beginning of the course.
The instructor holds the final authority regarding the requirements and method of implementation.
10%
Attendance is mandatory. Up to two unexcused absences are allowed.
Any additional unexcused absences will lower the final grade (proportionally to the number of absences).
To pass the course in the first term, physical attendance in at least 60% of classes is required.
Formal justifications for absence (e.g., medical certificates) are accepted, but total absences, including the two allowed unexcused ones, may not exceed 40% of all classes.
Passing threshold: 55%
A total of 100 points is available throughout the semester. To receive a passing grade, the student must earn at least 55 points.
Grading scale:
– from 55%: 3 (satisfactory)
– from 65%: 3+
– from 75%: 4 (good)
– from 85%: 4+
– from 91%: 5 (very good)
Permissible level of AI use: 2*
*It is acceptable to use AI-generated visual elements in the group assignment, provided that the AI is explicitly credited as the source.
