The research workshop involves self-defining the research problem and the subject of the study - whereby, given the field of study, it must relate to a chosen social issue or problem. In addition, students independently select an appropriate research technique (or several at the same time) and carry out an empirical study, with the students having to rely on interviews or in-depth interviews for each study, while a survey, observation or content analysis can only be regarded as additional. The information collected is then verified (collection cleaning). The next stage is the preparation of summary statistics and the development of conclusions based on them.
Preparation requires time to read the assigned readings.

Learning outcomes
Ability to plan and carry out the entire study independently.
Ability to identify a relevant social problem (research problem).
Ability to select the research technique, indicators, develop the research tool, verify the results, compile the results, verify the research hypothesis and compile the report (as well as the ability to present it).
At the end of the course students know and understand:
- K_W02 in depth the principles and methods of diagnosing and defining problems in the public sphere,
- K_W05 in-depth methodology of public policy research and the place of public policy in the system of social sciences,
- K_W06 in-depth principles and methods of public policy evaluation,
- K_W12 the importance of intellectual and industrial property protection in public policy research.
At the same time students are able to:
- K_U01 critically analyse the processes of formation and solution of problems in the public sphere,
- K_U04 design and conduct own research in the field of public policy (including evaluation research), including formulation and testing of hypotheses related to a specific research problem,
- K_U06 present the results of research and analysis in the field of public policy in an oral and written form, setting them in a broader methodological and theoretical context and taking into account a diverse range of audiences,
- K_U09 interact with others as part of a task team, assuming various roles in it, including team management skills,
- K_U10 complement and improve their knowledge and skills in the field of public policy as part of lifelong learning, and motivate others to undertake lifelong education.
After carrying out their own empirical research, students are ready to:
- K_K01 critically evaluate the scientific and social debate in the area of public policy, as well as their participation in it, including recognising the importance of scientific evidence and the role of experts in the process of creating and implementing public policy public policy.
Assessment criteria
Students discuss the various stages of their work individually or in small groups in the following classes. During the discussion (looking for weaknesses and strengths of the project), a plan for the next steps is established.
The final assessment takes into account not only the correct execution of the own research, but also the complexity of the research problem, access to the group of respondents, as well as their size (which translates into the reliability of the findings and the possibility of formulating broader conclusions).
The students' progress, commitment, timeliness and initiative in carrying out their own research are assessed and report after research.
