Methodology of research on labour and industrial relations 2103-ORP-M-D1MBSP
The classes aim at providing students with basic knowledge about labour relations (individual and collective) and industrial relations, together with knowledge of research methods and techniques applicable to research on these issues, selected appropriately for the subject. The aim of the classes is to develop abilities in using the methods/principles presented during the classes in conducting independent research.
The issues discussed during the classes are divided into theoretical and practical blocks.
Block I
1. Labour and industrial relations - legal and socio-economic issues
2. Polish labour relations (individual and collective) and their specificity
3. Evolution of industrial relations. Current research findings – what are industrial relations in the 21st century
4. Labour and industrial relations as a subject of interdisciplinary research (research: legal, economic, social, human resources management; theoretical and practical aspects)
5. Methodology of labour relations research – various research methods (comparative, institutional, resource-based)
6. Analysis of the protection of intellectual and industrial property in the area of labour and industrial relations.

7. Research on existing data: statistical data and other data sources
8. Quantitative methods and techniques in the study of labour and industrial relations. Examples of the use of quantitative methods and techniques in research on the sphere of work and industrial relations
9. Qualitative methods and techniques in research on labour and industrial relations. Examples of the use of quantitative methods and techniques in research on the sphere of work and industrial relations
10. Basics of research design: conceptualisation

The graduate knows and understands:
K_W01 theoretical categories used in research on labour and industrial relations.
K_W05 in-depth methodology of researching labour and industrial relations, including the main theoretical paradigms of social research, methods and techniques of quantitative and qualitative research, as well as statistical methods.
K_W10 the importance of protecting intellectual and industrial property in the area of labour and industrial relations.
Abilities
The graduate is able to:
K_U02 formulate, analyse and solve problems related to the functioning of the organization in the context of labour and industrial relations.
K_U03 design, plan and conduct social research in the area of labour and industrial relations, including formulating and testing hypotheses related to the research problems, using selected research approaches and applying advanced quantitative and qualitative social research methods and techniques, including statistical methods, and also advanced information and communication techniques.
Social competence
The graduate is ready to take into account:
K_K01 the principle of priority of scientific knowledge in solving problems in professional work, critical assessment of knowledge acquired and received content in the field of labour and industrial relations, and conscious and responsible use of expert knowledge.
K_K03 responsible and ethical performance of professional roles in the area of labour and industrial relations, with attention to the development of the achievements of the profession and professional ethics, as well as professional self-development.
Course outcomes
Knowledge
After completing the course, student knows:
• what industrial relations are and what the relationship of this concept to collective and individual employment relations is,
• the basic conceptual framework used to describe, analyse and explain phenomena that constitute labour and industrial relations,
• the most important indicators used to describe the state of labour and industrial relations,
• basic social research methods and related techniques in relation to labour and industrial relations.
Abilities
After completing the course, student is able to:
• apply basic methods and techniques of social research to the study of labour and industrial relations,
• collect and analyse data from sources found in the study of labour and industrial relations (desk research),
• apply basic theoretical concepts regarding labour and industrial relations in analysis and conclusions.
Social competence
After completing the course, student:
• demonstrates an understanding of the complexity of the field of labour and industrial relations,
• is aware of the need to use interdisciplinary knowledge in the study of labour and industrial relations
Assessment criteria
Attendance (two absences allowed). Activity during classes and preparation for classes, including preparation of a case study and participation in a discussion. Partial credit exams during the course.
Final written exam: test questions (multiple choice) and open questions
