Labour migration 2103-ORP-L-D4MIZA
Migration was and is a global phenomenon. United Nations estimates show that migrants account for approx. United Nations estimates show that migrants make up about 3 per cent of the world's population, or more than 200 million. The main reasons for migration continue to be, on the one hand, the desire for a better quality of life or the search for better paid jobs and, on the other, wars, environmental disasters or political persecution. The phenomenon of migration is currently very widely discussed worldwide. Interest in this issue has further increased as a result of the so-called 'migration crisis' of 2015-2017 related to the influx of migrants intending to apply for 'refugee' status into the EU and the crisis triggered by Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Four themes dominate this debate:
- labour migration,
- 'refugee' migration
- family reunification, and
- integration of foreigners into host societies.
There is a preponderance of academic studies arguing that labour immigration benefits both sending and receiving countries. For receiving countries, the positive consequences are mainly: filling labour shortages in the labour market, increasing the competitiveness of the economy and transfers to the pension and tax systems reducing budget deficits. For the sending countries, it is mainly reducing unemployment and cash transfers to the families of emigrants. At the same time, migration is also associated with challenges such as 'brain drain', integration difficulties or a negative impact on unemployment levels in receiving countries and limiting wage growth.
It is also very important to try to predict the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on migration processes. The main question that can be asked in this context is whether, after the end of the pandemic, it will be possible to return to the size and rules on which migration took place before 2019.
It is also crucial to monitor the economic activity of war refugees from Ukraine, including making comparisons in this regard within EU Member States.
The following topics are discussed in the course:
