The seminar is devoted to a detailed discussion of the origins of social policy and social issues. Preparation requires time to read the assigned readings for the class. The class will discuss the concept of social policy and social issues (various definitions). This will be followed by a general indication of the occurrence of social issues in Poland at different times. The next class will be devoted to demographic problems (e.g. migration), followed by a discussion of the following issues: poverty, unemployment, housing, education, leisure time, national minorities, health, ecology, as well as the problem of gender equality and social pathologies. The class will conclude with a discussion of social policy projections and the determinants of particular social issues. Topics range from the Industrial Revolution (19th century) to the Autumn of Nations (20th century).

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course Students will be able to define what social policy and social issue are, as well as to characterise particular social issues, taking into account regional specificity and time of occurrence. He/she is able to indicate factors causing the occurrence of selected social issues and ways of mitigating or overcoming them. Be able to assess the impact of social issues on particular social groups. Is able to critically address interpretations of the genesis of particular social issues. Is able to relate the possibilities of implementing sectoral policies and counteracting selected social issues to broader historical and political conditions.
At the same time students know and understand in historical perspective:
- K_W01 the terminology of social policy science and have knowledge of the place of social policy science in the system of sciences, as well as know and understand the basic methods and techniques of social policy research,
- K_W02 types, manifestations, structures and dynamics of social problems on the national, local, global scale, as well as relations between them and their structural conditions in the context of social policy,
- K_W03 transformations of family, neighbourhood, local, professional ties and structures; have advanced knowledge of the nature, sources and consequences of these changes for social policy.
At the same time, students are able to, in a historical perspective:
- K_U01 interpret social phenomena accurately recognizing social problems, social issues and social risks and are able to indicate their economic and socio-demographic conditions in the context of social policy,
- K_U07 publicly present their research, analyses and forecasts in the area of social policy, and participate in the debate on issues in the area of social policy.
At the same time, students are ready to:
- K_K01 critically evaluate their own knowledge and external communications in the area of social policy, and recognise the relevance of scientific evidence for social policy as a practical activity, building on knowledge of past experiences.
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria: lectures are conducted in the form of a seminar, for which it is necessary to read the assigned readings for specific classes.
After the first semester, there is a final test on the material covered, which must be passed in order to continue classes in the summer semester.
After the second semester, the course ends with a written exam. In order to pass the exam, it is necessary to participate in classes and be familiar with selected fragments of the subject literature.
The overall assessment (semester and annual) may take into account additional student activity, provided that it is agreed upon with the group.
