Introduction to social policy 2103-L-D1WDPS
The aim of the course is:
- systematic presentation of knowledge needed to pass the exam;
- to introduce basic information on social policy.
In the introductory part of the course there will be presented the genesis of World’s and Polish social policy as a practice activity and academic discipline, as well as the values which serves social policy realization. Next there will be presented institutional matters of social policy connected with its: conditions and tools of acting, theoretical models, the levels of realization, social needs and indexes of their fulfillment.
The classes are focused on analyses of basic theoretical terms in the field of social policy, social problems and social issues, social needs, definitions of social policy, dilemmas connected with the influence of different values systems on social policy. Also the most vital issues (such as: demographic crisis, unemployment, poverty and social inequality, housing problem, education, health issue, international migration, disability, ecology) will be presented. During the workshops students will be encouraged to present different methods of prevention and solving mentioned social problems, as well as indicate the weak and strong points of these methods.

Learning outcomes
After the course students:
- know and understand the specificity of social policy science compared to other social sciences;
- have knowledge of public policies implementing in practice the broadly understood social policy of the state
- know basic terms of social policy and can locate social policy in the system of social sciences;
- have basic knowledge about social issues on local, national and global scale and can point the relations between them, is able to interpret social phenomena, social issues and social risks;
- can show interests and systems of values in social program, as well as explain their connection with chosen solutions;
- can link social problems with the competences of social policy institutions
After the classes students are able to:
- indicate the social policy definitions and indexes;
- point the main important social problems and explain their genesis;
- propose, critically assess and compare various strategies of solving the social problems;
- analyze different conditions influencing activity in the field of social policy.
Assessment criteria
A writing test consisted of three parts: open question test, filling the gaps test and test of choice (60 minutes).
