Module Description (Lecture: 30 hours, Seminar: 15 hours)
The module aims to familiarize students with the qualitative approach in political science. It covers the role of qualitative methods, their epistemological foundations, examples of application, and critical perspectives. Students will be introduced to the main qualitative methods (data collection and analysis) used in political science. The final part of the course will provide a general overview of mixed-methods (data collection and analysis) in political science.
Lecture Topics (30 hours):
1. Organizational matters: Types and trends in qualitative research (q-research: non-quantitative and Q-research: anti-positivist and interpretative). Research design in qualitative studies.
2. Key research methods: In-depth interviews.
3. Key research methods: Participant observation.
4. Key research methods: Thematic analysis.
5. Key research methods: Critical discourse analysis.
6. Key research methods: Qualitative content analysis.
7. Key research methods: Case study research.
8. Ethical standards in qualitative research.
9. Key research methods: Participatory action research.
10. Key research methods: Qualitative comparative analysis.
11. Key research methods: Continued exploration of qualitative comparative analysis.
12. Key research methods: Grounded theory and its evolution.
13. Key research methods: Mixed-methods research.
14. Summary and conclusions.
Workshops topics (15 hours):
1. Organizational matters: Literature mapping.
2. Practical application of in-depth interviews.
3. Inductive and deductive coding techniques in practice.

Knowledge: The graduate knows and understands:
- concepts and terminology used in qualitative methodology applied in political science (K_W01),
- qualitative methods, tools, and research techniques employed in political science (K_W02),
- developmental trends in qualitative methodology used in the field of political science and administration (K_W04).
Skills: The graduate is able to:
- use their knowledge of qualitative methodology to understand political processes, formulate observed problems, and propose innovative solutions for them (K_U01),
- perform selection of scientific and non-scientific sources using qualitative methodology, critically analyze them, and draw conclusions based on them (K_U02),
- apply learned methods, techniques, and qualitative research tools (including advanced information and communication technologies) to analyze selected research problems (K_U03),
- appropriately select and apply qualitative methods and political science theories (K_U04),
- communicate with academic and non-academic audiences using acquired knowledge and methods of its application (K_U05),
- debate topics related to qualitative methodology with awareness of the significance of conveyed content and the manner of its presentation (K_U06),
- communicate orally and in writing in English on topics related to the field of study, using specialized terminology at the C2 level of the CEFR, including preparing academic, analytical, and other texts in English (K_U09).
Social Competences: The graduate is prepared to:
- critically evaluate political processes, their causes, dynamics, and consequences using qualitative methods (K_K01),
- acknowledge the importance of knowledge—acquired through qualitative methods—in solving political science problems related to the state and society (K_K02),
- act responsibly in their professional activities and be aware of its outcomes and consequences, adhering to the highest standards of professional ethics (K_K04).
