Sociology of the Public Sphere 2100-PP-M-D1SSPU

Upon completion of the course, students will:
- know and understand basic concepts in the sociology of the public sphere,
- be able to continuously monitor information about economic, social and political situations (including international ones); recognize their impact on the state of the public sphere,
- be able to analyze processes of identifying and solving problems in the public sphere,
- know selected public policies,
- possess the ability to critically evaluate scientific and social debates in the area of public policy,
- be able to recognize the importance of scientific evidence and the role of experts in the process of creating and implementing public policy.

The classes will serve to achieve the following learning outcomes specified in the study programs:

(Knowledge)
* the student has in-depth knowledge and understanding of principles and methods for diagnosing and defining problems in the public sphere (KW_02)
* the student has in-depth knowledge and understanding of public policy research methodology and the place of public policy in the social sciences system (KW_05)
* the student knows and understands the management and co-governance of the public policy process and mechanisms of public decision-making (KW_08)
* the student knows and understands factors and conditions influencing the public policy process (KW_09)

(Skills)
* the student can critically analyze processes of identifying and solving problems in the public sphere (KU_01)

(Social competences)
* the student possesses the ability to critically evaluate scientific and social debates in the area of public policy, as well as their own participation in them, including recognition of the importance of scientific evidence and the role of experts in the process of creating and implementing public policy (KK_01)
* the student possesses the ability to properly identify and resolve dilemmas related to work in the area of public policy, both as scientific and practical activity; is ready to responsibly fulfill their professional role, including developing achievements in the area of public policy (KK_03)
* the student possesses the ability to continuously monitor information about economic, social and political situations affecting the public sphere, as well as to continuously supplement knowledge in the area of public policy directly and indirectly related to their professional profile, including taking into account changing socio-political, economic and institutional-legal circumstances - thus contributing to professional development (KK_04)

Students may have two absences.
Knowledge of the required literature for each class will be tested during seminars.
Excessive absences and insufficient preparation for classes must be made up during office hours before the end of the semester.
The final grade for the course consists of:
* three-fifths (60%) from a written examination grade, which will test the intended learning outcomes (more details about required competences, knowledge and skills in the "Learning outcomes" section); part of the exam will test knowledge of basic readings in public sphere studies,
* two-fifths (40%) from the grade of active student participation in classes; in this way - in addition to their knowledge and skills - their social competences will be tested (see "Learning outcomes" section).

Use of Artificial Intelligence

This course applies the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) Level 2 approach: AI -assisted idea generation and structuring. Artificial intelligence may be used for brainstorming, creating structure and generating ideas for work improvement, as well as for basic research assistance (source searching, fact-checking) and technical support (formatting, citation, proofreading). No AI-generated content may appear in the final version of work. All arguments, analyses, reflections and conclusions must be the student's original thinking and demonstrate their own understanding of civic and political issues.
