(in Polish) Problemy i kwestie społeczne w filmie i muzyce w Polsce w latach 80-tych - OG 2100-PK-M-D4PKSF
The intention of the class is to introduce the audience to the relevance of social problems and issues in the 1980s through an analysis of film and music creation.
The totalitarian state was the disposer of the means of distributing artistic creation in the field of film, but - due to the relatively low cost of ‘creation’ - was unable to control the dispersed groups of artist-musicians. This resulted in a situation in which part of the musical output (accepted by the decision-makers) went into the state distribution channels (t.v., radio, music shops: LP, SP, MC) and part was distributed outside the official circuit (MC).
In a totalitarian state, every social issue and problem had its political significance. They were treated by the authorities as highlighting the failure of the socialist state to fulfil its constitutional obligations. Constant institutional supervision (censorship) and the system of distributing funds for creativity and the possibility of earning money (concerts, music publishing) enforced a certain direction of creativity, effectively impoverishing the offer of Polish artists. Similarly, film studios - in fear that a film would not be accepted for distribution (the so-called colonel-shelving), created pictures on the basis of scripts that had a chance of being accepted.
The social and economic situation of the Polish People's Republic of Poland, with a particular focus on social problems and issues, will be introduced for the purposes of the class. At the same time, an attempt will be made to see to what extent the real social and economic situation of the country was reflected in film and music productions. In the light of existing source materials (vide the literature), there is a reasonable belief that sensitive social issues were not addressed in film and music, and were often replaced by light-hearted messages devoid of social reflection. In the 1980s, there was a clear rivalry between ambitious film and music production and entertainment in the Polish People's Republic.
