Quantitative Methods in Cultural Research 2100-PK-M-D2IMBK
The aim of the course is to introduce students to quantitative methods in cultural research and to familiarize them with the basic principles of designing, conducting, and interpreting research based on quantitative data used in social research within the cultural sector. The course seeks to develop an understanding of the specific characteristics of quantitative research in the field of culture, including its limitations, potential, and applications in institutional practice.
During the course, students become familiar with key concepts and stages of the research process, including the formulation of research problems, the operationalization of concepts, the construction of research instruments, and basic approaches to processing and interpreting quantitative data. The classes are oriented toward understanding quantitative research primarily as an analytical tool.
Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the role of quantitative research as a tool supporting cultural management processes and decision-making in the field of cultural policies. This includes the interpretation of data, critical analysis of research reports, and the informed use of research findings in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities in the cultural sector. Students are sensitized to the specific nature of social research conducted in cultural institutions and within the context of public cultural policies.
An integral part of the course is a practical component in which students design and carry out a small-scale research project (a micro-project) focusing on a selected issue related to culture. The purpose of this component is to develop basic research competences, such as working with research instruments, data collection, data organization, and the formulation of conclusions appropriate to the scope and character of the conducted research.
The course draws on examples of quantitative research conducted in areas such as cultural participation, audience satisfaction with cultural services, motivations of cultural consumers, the functioning and resources of cultural institutions, organizational image, communication and marketing strategies, and organizational culture.

K_W04
The student knows the basic principles of knowledge transfer from scientific research to the practice of the cultural sector, including the use of research results in decision-making processes, reporting, and the communication of findings, as well as the principles of copyright protection and intellectual property in the context of research and data analysis.
K_W05
The student is familiar with basic phenomena and trends in contemporary culture related to political, economic, and social transformations, including processes of mediatization, to an extent that allows their analysis using quantitative research.
SKILLS
K_U01
The student is able to creatively and critically analyze models of institutional culture using the results of quantitative research, and to formulate conclusions and recommendations relevant to cultural management practice and cultural policies.
K_U05
The student is able to critically assess their own research skills, particularly in the design of simple quantitative studies, the selection of research instruments, and the interpretation of data, and demonstrates readiness to further develop these skills.
K_U06
The student is able to independently conduct in-depth analyses and syntheses of processes taking place in public cultural life at the national and/or international level, using quantitative data and existing research reports.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES
K_K01
The student is prepared for independent and critical evaluation of their own knowledge and the values acquired through the analysis of data, research reports, and academic literature in the field of cultural research.
K_K03
The student demonstrates awareness of the importance of the research ethos, principles of research integrity, the public nature of research results, and the protection of intellectual property, as well as respect for the tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the context of research and analysis.
K_K04
The student is prepared for critical evaluation of research achievements in the field of cultural studies and of their own contribution to the development of knowledge about culture, with particular attention to the possibilities and limitations of quantitative research.
Assessment criteria
The basis for course completion is a group-based micro research project carried out in teams of 4–5 students. The project consists of designing and conducting a simple quantitative study related to a selected issue in the field of culture or the cultural sector, as well as preparing and presenting the research results.
The outcomes of the team’s work take the form of a presentation (a report in the form of a multimedia presentation) that includes all stages of the research process, as well as interpretative and communicative components.
The following elements of the project are subject to assessment:
– Conceptualization and operationalization of the research problem, supported by a review of relevant academic literature as well as existing studies and research reports related to the analyzed issue.
– Quality of the research instrument, in particular the correctness of questionnaire construction, the adequacy of questions in relation to the research problem, and the internal coherence of the instrument.
– Correct processing, interpretation, and discussion of results, including consideration of the limitations of the conducted study.
– Quality of data visualization, including the clarity of charts and tables and their consistency with the presented results.
– A concise summary of the key research findings in the form of a short press note in English, prepared for an audience outside the academic community.
The final grade for the course reflects the overall quality of the research project, the coherence of its individual components, methodological correctness, and the ability to present and communicate research findings in a manner appropriate to the practice of the cultural sector.
