Block I Crises during the People's Republic of Poland
Polish society and the communist authorities. The People's Republic of Poland as a socio-political entity (systemic changes, divisions within the structures of power, characteristics of a semi-totalitarian system, social and demographic changes). Forms of social resistance and political opposition.The interdependence between the economic and political situation and major social uprisings.
Workers' protests in June 1956 in Poznań. Polish October '56 as an attempt to come to terms with the period of Stalinism in Poland. Władysław Gomułka's rise to power – the realities of life in society during the period of so-called ‘small stabilisation’. People's power in the face of socio-political crises: March 1968 and December 1970. The Gierek decade – ‘socialist consumer society’. Workers' protests in June 1976 and their consequences.
Block II Crises in the 1980s
The formation of anti-system opposition after the workers' protests of 1976. Self-organisation of society – the emergence of organisations independent of the authorities, including the trade union movement. The socio-political and economic background to the workers' protests in Poland in the summer of 1980. The course of events on the coast and the spread of the crisis to the rest of the country. Conciliatory forms of resolving the crisis – negotiations between the strikers and the government – the signing of the August Agreements. The introduction of martial law, its short-term and long-term consequences.
Block III Crises of the political transformation of 1989
The social and economic crisis of the late 1980s. International background – changes in the USSR. Erosion of the system – from the talks in Magdalenka and the Round Table to the establishment of the Third Republic of Poland. Political and social divisions. Disputes over the political system of the state.
Block IV Crises in the early years of the Third Republic of Poland
The phenomenon of post-communist division as the main determinant of divisions on the party scene and Poles' electoral decisions after 1989. Socio-economic reforms as a source of social tensions in the first decade of the Third Republic of Poland.

K_W02 The student characterises, at an advanced level, the social, political and economic determinants of internal security during the People's Republic of Poland and the Third Republic of Poland, understands the relationships between these determinants and their impact on internal security after World War II.
K_W03 The student explains the basic problems and challenges for internal security in the field of political crises, with particular emphasis on their political background in the People's Republic of Poland and the Third Republic of Poland.
K_W05 The student characterises the conflict mechanisms causing political and social crises, with particular emphasis on the period of the People's Republic of Poland and the early years of the Third Republic of Poland. The student explains the political and economic tools used to defuse them in both historical periods.
K_W06 The student lists the fundamental attributes and mechanisms of the Polish state during the communist rule and after the democratisation of the system in 1989. The student characterises the functioning of the bodies responsible for creating security policy in People's Poland and the change in their role after the political transformation. The student knows and understands the principles of the functioning of the state during the introduction of martial law in Poland in 1981.
K_W07 The student explains the role of political and economic crises in the functioning of the Polish state and society, with particular emphasis on People's Poland and the beginning of the Third Republic of Poland.
K_W08 The student analyses, at an advanced level, the relationships between threats occurring at various levels: global, regional, national and local, understands the links between them and their impact on internal security.
K_K01 The student is able to formulate, analyse and solve problems and tasks in the field of security based on knowledge of conflicts from the period of the People's Republic of Poland and the early years of the Third Republic of Poland. The student is able to collect, gather and process information about crises in the People's Republic of Poland and the period of political transformation, and to analyse and synthesise it.
Assessment criteria
The final grade for the course is based on the results of a test. The test is conducted during the last class of the semester.
The maximum number of points a student can obtain from the test is 20. For each correct answer, the student receives 1 point. No answer or incorrect answer = 0 points.

20-18 points: Very good (5)
17-16 points: Good plus (4+)
15-14 points: Good (4)
13-11 points: Satisfactory plus (3+)
10-8 points: Satisfactory (3)
Level of regulation SI 1. Verification of learning outcomes is carried out entirely without the aid of artificial intelligence. Students rely solely on their knowledge, understanding and skills. Artificial intelligence may not be used at any stage of the assessment.
