Global cities and metropolises 1900-SM-4-4MEP-5
EXERCISE:
Students will simulate the revitalization process and address the following topics:
• analysis of phenomena leading to degradation of cities;
• typology and delimitation of deprived areas;
• evolution, the definition of concepts and their identification in selected examples (inter alia, conservation, restoration, reconstruction, regeneration, modernization, revitalization, and renewal);
• relations between social, spatial, economic and policy processes of urban renewal;
• practices and principles of revitalization processes;
• pitfalls and problems of urban renewal.
PROJECT: Problems of modern cities - own project based on a systematic literature review and work with sources (Zotero)
Classes will take the form of a lecture combined with exercises. Students will learn the procedure for conducting systematic reviews of sources and how to use bibliometric and bibliographic databases during the lecture. Students will also get familiar with a selection of exemplary systematic reviews. Each student will carry out an individual project during the practical part - a systematic review of the literature on a selected research problem. The result of the project will be a concise protocol pertaining to the specific challenges which contemporary cities face. The piece will present the available research results. To successfully pass the course, students are expected to familiarise themselves with the assigned software and finalise the individual assignment, which will include a literature review and the use of recommended tools as per the instructor’s requirements, with the use of MaxQDA software and literature management programs.
