Contemporary theories in urban studies 1900-SM-1-34
The course is based on reading and discussion on the most important texts for contemporary urban studies. Examples of issues, theories and concepts that will be discussed are: Zwischenstadt (T. Sieverts), scale and politics of scale (N. Brenner, N. Smith), coherence of urban space (D. Harvey), city as a political idea (K. Nawratek), city and citizenship (J. Holston), planetary urbanization and its criticism (N. Brenner and Ch. Schmid), urban metabolism (M. Gandy), urban political ecology (E. Swyngedouw), gender and the city (F. Tonkiss), creative class and its criticism (R. Florida), new urbanism and its criticism (J. Gehl), the nightmare of participation (M. Miessen), urban movements, new metropolitan mainstream (INURA), place-making.
A practical element of the course will be to familiarize students with the art of academic argumentation, rules of polemics and rhetoric.
