Religion, society and spatial management 1900-3-RSP-GL-W
Various religions and beliefs as well as assumptions of space management resulting from the holy books and local traditions are characterized.
Religious buildings - location preferences and characteristic architectural elements to express religious content.
Traces of Judaic culture in Poland, with particular emphasis on Warsaw.
Small sacred architecture and its religious and social functions.
The secularization of society: changing the functions of sacred architecture and desacralisation of space.
Centers and pilgrimage routes in Christianity (Catholicism and Orthodoxy), Islam and Hinduism.
During the classes, there will be organise trips to places of religious worship of various denominations in Warsaw and the surrounding area.
The student's workload to achieve the expected learning outcomes is 3 ECTS = 3 * 25 h = 75 h. Includes:
- student's participation in classes (30 h);
- student's own work (30 h), includes: reading 1-2 scientific articles before each class (20 h); preparing and delivering a presentation (5 h), writing an essay (5 h);
- participation in 2 trips to religious places (10 h).

Learning outcomes
Knowledge. Student:
- characterizes the main research trends and achievements of contemporary geography of religions and explains the key concepts of this discipline: religion, sacred, religious landscape, sacred landscape;
- has an organized knowledge of socio-cultural phenomena in the context of religious behavior in various areas of the world;
- names and characterizes the basic religions and religious movements in Poland and in the world;
- has an organized knowledge of the determinants of cultural and religious phenomena in Poland and in the world;
- is aware of the religious diversity of the world and its impact on the cultural and political situation of regions in the world;
Skills. Student:
- apply knowledge of the history and geography of religion to analyze and interpret the events of the contemporary world;
- prepare a lecture based on the literature on the subject and present it through a presentation;
- has the ability to present detailed issues in the field of cultural and religious issues of the world, including scientific methods.
Social competences. The student is ready to:
- expanding professional competences and updating knowledge in the field of geography of religion, enriched with an interdisciplinary dimension;
- assessment of the cultural diversity of the world and accepts the rules of behavior resulting from respect and kindness towards representatives of other cultures and religions
- intercultural / inter-religious dialogue.
Assessment criteria
The subject ends with an assessment of students' activity in the class (lectures and presentations, participation in discussions) and a written test for the entire material (test at the last class).
Class attendance is obligatory. Two excused absences are allowed.
In the winter semester 2020/21, classes are conducted remotely using GoogleMeet tools and the Kampus platform.
