Urban Areas 1900-3-OZU-GL
The aim of the course is to provide a detailed analysis of the diversity of processes taking place in urban areas in different regions of the world. The issues presented in the course allow students to interpret and understand the conditions that shape cities. The main focus is on spatial, socio-economic, political and cultural conditions.
Individual meetings are devoted to presentations and discussions on the following topics:
1. The city as an object of research. What does the contemporary appearance of cities tell us? – introduction
2. Global processes and their local effects in the 21st century – new CBDs, entertainment-based redevelopment, fragmentation of urban space etc.
3. Investors, speculators and patho-development – housing and spatial planning in the neoliberal economy.
4. Densification, sprawl, shrinkage – diverse challenges of spatial planning
5. Urban renewal – redevelopment, revitalisation of post-industrial spaces, energy poverty.
6. Living with nature in the city – denaturalisation, new pro-ecological investments.
7. Changes in neighbourhoods and communities – residential segregation, enclaves of wealth and poverty, gated communities.
8. Contemporary processes in cities – student presentations.
9. Contemporary processes – tour of Warsaw (or a day trip to another city).

- complex social, political and cultural processes in urban communities
- regional differentiation of urbanization processes taking place in the world
- the impact of globalization on the development of urban areas

The student is able to:
- use theoretical knowledge to describe and solve a research problem
- interpret the importance of the influence of socio-economic and cultural political factors on the functioning of given urban areas
- transfer geographic knowledge to different audiences
- use detailed geographical terminology in Polish and in a foreign language at the B2 + level
Attitudes
The student can:
- cooperate and work in a group
- shows respect and openness to cultures developed in other cultural and civilization circles
- takes actions in an entrepreneurial manner in the preparation and implementation of social, environmental and economic projects
Assessment criteria
The condition for passing the course is active participation in class discussions (25% of the grade), preparation and presentation of two papers on a given topic (40%) and obtaining a positive grade for the final written exam (40%). 50% of the points are required to obtain a positive assessment.
The resit exam takes the form of an oral exam on the content of the lectures.
