B. Sc. Proseminar 1900-1-PSEM-SE
The aim of the proseminar is:
- transfer of knowledge regarding basic scientific methods and selected research methods used in socio-economic geography in the course of preparing a bachelor's thesis;
- familiarize the student with the stages of the research process and preparation of a scientific thesis as well as the conceptualization and operationalization of the bachelor's thesis (including defining the issues of the thesis, research problems, scope of the work, setting research questions and hypotheses, selecting research methods);
- learning how to search for information sources;
- gaining knowledge about text editing;
- learning tools for visualizing progress in research work (presentation of processes and phenomena presented in the bachelor's thesis).
Proseminar: 2 ECTS (50 hours) – hours in direct contact with the lecturers, i.e. participation in classes 30 hours. Student's own contribution 20 hours, including reading the literature 10 hours, studying research methods and techniques 10 hours.

After completing the course, the student:
KNOWLEDGE: knows the principles of conceptualization (formulation of a research problem and hypotheses) and operationalization of scientific work and tools for presenting phenomena depending on the type of scientific research technique (observation, interview, analysis of bibliographic materials); can use literature, obtain information from a database and other properly selected sources (also in English, currently recognized as the language of international communication); knows the principles of technical text editing and how to construct footnotes, figure captions, tables and appendices.
SKILLS: is able to independently apply appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze empirical material in spatial research, is able to analyze the collected information, draw synthetic conclusions, interpret the collected information; form opinions; has the ability to use theoretical knowledge to describe and solve a research problem; is able to independently plan and conduct research in the field of socio-economic geography.
ATTITUDES: critically assesses the usefulness and application possibilities of specific research methods and techniques.
Assessment criteria
Attendance at classes (two absences allowed). The assessment is based on the student's activity during the proseminar, progress in completing the bachelor's thesis, quality of presentation and ability to justify the obtained results. The proseminar participant is obliged to present at least one presentation per semester of a selected issue (based on literature) or progress in the completion of his master's thesis. The condition for passing the proseminar is to agree on the topic of the bachelor's thesis with the Student, prepare an extensive outline of the bachelor's thesis and select a thesis supervisor.
