Cultural Heritage in Local Development and Management Strategies 1600-SZD-SPEC-DK-GSE
The course aims to present cultural heritage as a dynamic analytical category and a tool for territorial development, significant in geographical research, spatial planning, and local and regional governance. Heritage is analysed not only as an object of protection, but primarily as a socio-economic resource, subject to processes of negotiation, interpretation and instrumentalisation within public policies.
The course combines theoretical and methodological perspectives with an analysis of practical applications of heritage across different spatial scales (local and regional) and development dimensions (cities, regions, tourism, demography, social cohesion). Particular emphasis is placed on a critical approach, power relations, conflicts of interest, and contemporary challenges in heritage management.

Assessment criteria
Description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permitted number of explained absences:
The course is conducted in the form of five teaching sessions.
Active participation is required to pass the course; one absence is permitted without the need for justification.
The basis for passing the course is the preparation and presentation, during the final class, of a presentation presenting the results of the completed project, in accordance with the course objectives.
Participants are expected to actively engage in the classes, in particular by:
● participating in discussions,
● analysing and discussing presented case studies,
● cooperating within project-based activities.
Principles for passing the classes and the subject (including resit session):
The course is graded on a pass (ZAL) basis.
A positive result is awarded on the basis of completion of a project consistent with the nature of the course, aimed at combining theoretical content discussed during the classes with the analysis of selected case studies and/or the discipline represented by the participant.
The project culminates in a presentation of results during the final class, delivered in the form of an oral presentation with a minimum duration of 15 minutes.
Methods for the verification of learning outcomes: In-class assessment, with the possibility of individual meetings at institutions outside the University of Warsaw
Evaluation criteria:
● compliance of the presented content with the substantive framework of the course outlined at the beginning of the classes,
● relevance and appropriate use of theoretical content,
● accuracy and logical coherence of case study analysis,
● substantive quality of conclusions,
● quality of presentation (clarity of communication, structure of the presentation, ability to argue and manage time).
