Spatial Order and Disorder in Cities: Theory and Practice 1600-SZD-SPEC-ŁN-GSE
The course "Spatial Order and Disorder in Cities: Theory and Practice" aims to present problems related to the need to organize urban space according to the needs of its users (individual and institutional) while taking into account socio-economic and natural conditions and consequences. The lecture content is outlined as follows:
Lecture 1 – Definitions of spatial order, spatial chaos, and related concepts, an outline of the history of urban planning worldwide
Lecture 2 – Evolution of models of the socio-spatial structure of cities, with particular emphasis on the period from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the mid-20th century
Lecture 3 – Contemporary concepts of shaping urban space
Lecture 4 – Cities planned and developing harmoniously versus cities developing spontaneously: examples from around the world and Poland
Lecture 5 – Causes of "order and disorder" in urban space, the importance of historical and natural conditions, and contemporary socio-economic conditions (including cultural, political, legal, and technological ones)

Assessment criteria
Description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permitted number of explained absences: Active participation in classes, absence from 2 lectures is permitted.
Principles for passing the classes and the subject (including resit session): A short essay (up to approximately 5 pages) devoted to the analysis of order/disorder in a fragment of urban space known from personal experience.
Methods for the verification of learning outcomes: The essay that is the basis for the assessment should include references to the content presented during the lectures.
Evaluation criteria: The final grade will consist of: 1) evaluation of the essay, taking into account its content and form, 2) attendance at classes, 3) activity during classes.
