Communication and media studies - discipline seminar 1600-SZD-SD-KSiM
The seminar reviews the key theoretical concepts and methodological and organizational foundations of the discipline of social communication and media studies. It is dedicated to discussing groundbreaking scientific manuscripts and research projects. The program will include two modules, each devoted to threads from a different area of research and theoretical considerations. In 2022/2023 the seminar will be led by: Prof. dr hab. Jadwiga Woźniak-Kasperek (module: information and book studies, 6 hours) and Dr Karolina Brylska (module: social communication and media studies, 10 hours).
The Minister of Science and Higher Education regulation of 20 September 2018 introduced a new classification of fields of science, scientific disciplines and artistic disciplines. As a result, the discipline of communication and media studies were created, grouped under the common name
of the book studies and information science, communication and media studies and cognition sciences.
In this context, the critical scientific articles and books concerning the trends and concepts in the field of communication and media studies will be analyzed. Also, the main methodological challenges within the discipline will be discussed. PhD students will actively participate in the
presentation and discussion on selected topics.
Objectives of the course: a) multifaceted discussion on the context in which the discipline was created; b) analysis of the state of integration or federalization of the discipline; c) getting to know the specificity of research in the information and book studies through the prism of the most important texts of this science; e) learning about the specificity of media studies as interdisciplinary area, in which triangulation of research methods and techniques is being used; f) learning and critical evaluation of the most important theoretical and methodological
approaches within the discipline; g) identifying essential research methods and techniques helpful in exploring new forms and media spaces; h) indication of potential paths of integrated and sustainable development of the discipline.
