Part A. Main paradigms of studying on international security (c/a12 meetings)
- introductory lecture: general understanding of security and framework for analysis of the concept (main dimensions of the problem: issue of referent object – whose security?, scope of security – what is security and what are security threats?, security policy – who is securing whom and how?)
- realism (roots/background, main principles, assumptions and concepts; evolution and internal diversification of the paradigm – classical realism, structural realism, neoclassical realism, offensive vs. defensive realism; main topics, specific methods of research)
- liberalism (roots/background, main principles, assumptions and concepts; evolution of and internal diversification of the paradigm – main topics, incl. theory of democratic peace and just war theory and humanitarian intervention; specific methods of research)
- constructivism (roots/background, main principles, assumptions and concepts; evolution and internal diversification of the paradigm and main topics – incl. Copenhagen School and securitization issue);
- critical security studies and other postmodernist/postructuralist approaches (roots/background, main principles, assumptions and concepts; evolution and internal diversification of the paradigm and main topics; Welsh/Aberystwyth School; Paris School; post-colonial approaches and feminist approaches; main topics – strategic culture, ontological security, securitization (in critical understanding); specific methods)
- peace studies, conflict resolution and human security (main concepts and issues, Galtung’s understanding of conflict, theories and critique of conflict resolution, human security approach)
- security as practice and formal theories (game theories, principal-agent theory and theories brought from economy)

Assessment criteria
Description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permitted number of explained absences; none, 3 absences
Principles for passing the classes and the subject (including resit session); obligatory presentation on theoretical framework of prospective dissertations, participation in oral exam
Methods for the verification of learning outcomes; Oral exam
Evaluation criteria: 50% - presentation on theoretical framework of student’s dissertation; 40% - oral exam; 10% - active participation in discussion during the lectures (additional points for individual optional presentation)
