Spatial analysis in social research 1600-SZD-N-APBS-GSE
The main purpose of the course is to learn the theoretical and practical skills of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in spatial analysis of social phenomena and research. Participants will learn about the functionality of GIS as a tool for analysis and modeling of complex spatial relationships of the studied issues. The use of various spatial data models (vector and raster) and their integration as well as for the production, acquisition, editing and visualization of data will be considered.
Spatial data infrastructure, spatial and attribute data, acquisition and ordering.
Spatial analysis.
Analysis of socio-economic data.
Visualization of socio-economic data.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge (W; in Polish: “wiedza”) (the graduate knows and understands)
WG_02 the main scientific developments in the disciplines of the social sciences in which the education is provided
WG_03 the methodology of scientific research in the field of the social sciences
Skills (U; in Polish: “umiejętności”) (the graduate is able to)
UW_01 Take advantage of knowledge from different academic fields, in particular the social sciences to creatively
identify, formulate and innovatively solve complex problems or perform research tasks, especially:
− define the aim and subject of scientific research in the field of the social sciences, formulate a research
hypothesis,
− develop research methods, techniques and tools and use them creatively,
− Draw conclusions on the basis of research results
UO_01 plan and implement one’s own and team’s research or creative projects, in the field of the social sciences,
also in the international community
Social competences (K; in Polish” “kompetencje społeczne”) (the graduate is ready to)
KK_01 critically evaluate achievements within a given scientific discipline in the field of the social sciences
KK_03 recognise the value of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems within a specific discipline in the
field of the social sciences
Assessment criteria
The course of exercises includes the implementation of tasks during classes in the computer laboratory and projects carried out as part of homework, the results of which are sent for checking and presented to the group.
The assessment covers both the correctness of the selection of tools for carrying out tasks (projects) and the correctness of presenting the projects in the group forum.
Description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permissible number of excused absences: Permitted absence for 20% of classes.
