The reasons for the increasingly rare occurrence of monolingualism - also in Europe - in favor of bi- and multilingualism are clearly explained in the literature on the subject:
„Die große demographische Mobilität hat nun freilich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einer wachsenden Destabilisierung dieser historisch gewachsenen Sprachsituation geführt. Europa ist nicht mehr länger nur Herkunftsregion von Auswanderern, sondern zieht in großen Mengen anderssprachige Auszubildende, Arbeitsmigranten und Flüchtlinge aus aller Welt an. Demzufolge sind in Europa alle Staaten und größeren Städte „vielsprachig“ (Lüdi 1996: 320)” (The demographic shift of recent decades has, however, led to a growing destabilization of this historically shaped linguistic situation. Europe is no longer merely a place of origin for emigrants, but also attracts multitudes of multilingual interns, migrant workers, and refugees from around the world. Consequently, all countries and major cities in Europe are "multilingual.")
It should be emphasized that language contact is not merely a stable subject of linguistic description linked to language policy, identity, or education, but also a space in which contemporary forms of uncertainty are revealed: migratory, cultural, political, identity, and communication. This multifaceted nature of language contact offers a fascinating opportunity to delve into its circumstances, causes, consequences, and manifestations. Research on the phenomenon of language contact considers the bilingual norm from the perspective of speakers of a given language and members of a multilingual communication community (Zielińska 2013: 75). During the course we will deal with the historical and sociolinguistic conditions of bilingualism, language policies and ideologies, language management and language regime, code-switching, language contact phenomena and neologisms in bilingualism, dialectal features and older language forms in the speech of bilinguals and multilinguals, linguistic minorities and their identity, linguistic biographies of bilinguals and multilinguals, research methods and linguistic corpora, and language acquisition.
