Groundwater Resources 1400-ZWP-OP1
The lecture will cover the following topics:
1. Introduction to the groundwater circulation system
• Types of groundwater flow: local, intermediate, regional
• Unsaturated and saturated zones
• Hydrogeological parameters controlling permeability
• Darcy’s law
2. Natural factors shaping groundwater resources
• Recharge and discharge
• Climatic factors: droughts, seasonal variability, climate change
• Interactions between groundwater and surface water
3. Classification of groundwater resources: renewable, dynamic, static, available, and exploitable (abstraction) resources
4. Assessment of resource magnitude
• Hydrogeological water balance
• Role of monitoring data (precipitation, water levels, piezometric data)
• Difference between resources and the quantitative status of groundwater bodies (according to the Water Framework Directive)
• Simple resource assessment methods for nature conservation
5. Groundwater and groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs)
6. Pressures and threats to groundwater resources
• Over-abstraction
• Mine and construction dewatering
• Surface sealing and changes in landscape retention
• Urbanisation and catchment modification
• Climate change — expected impacts on groundwater resources
• Hydrogeological droughts
• Pollution as a factor limiting resource usability
7. Protection of groundwater resources
• Protection zones of groundwater intakes
• Area-based protection: links between land use and groundwater recharge
• Restoration and enhancement of landscape retention functions to improve groundwater resources
• Good practices in groundwater management

Assessment criteria
Course completion:
• based on the total number of points obtained in the written exam;
• the minimum number of points required to pass is >50%;
• the exam scope and point distribution will be presented during the first class of the semester;
• if the minimum number of points is not achieved, a retake exam is administered in written form.
