Lecture:
I. Conventional and molecular epidemiology; II. Innovative approaches and novel strategies for vaccine design: history of vaccination , overview of vaccine strategies, designing vaccines in the era of genomics, live vaccines based on attenuated microorganisms, subunit vaccine; new adjuvant, delivery systems, DNA vaccine, new vaccines: from the bench to clinical trials (vaccine against anthrax and tuberculosis); III. emerging trends in antibacterial discovery: :increase in the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, emerging pathogens, mining of the bacterial genomes/transcriptomes/proteomes for new targets of antibacterial drugs, structural analysis – starting point for new antibacterial drugs, new targets (efflux pumps, riboswitches, two components transduction system, quorum sensing system), aptamers, bacteriophage therapy, small antibacterial peptides, role of the indigenous human microbiota, HMP – human microbiome
Seminar: presentations of the original papers about new vaccination strategies and new antibacterial drugs.

Knowledge
Has up-to-date knowledge in the fields of biotechnology, molecular biology, genetic engineering and immunology and is acquainted with the scientific terminology concerning microbiology and genetics, the most recent research including discoveries and applications of microorganisms in biotechnology, medicine and molecular biology.
Knows the basic techniques and tools for the study of natural phenomena, especially used to study prophilaxis and therapy of bacterial infeciuos diseases
Shows the expertise in designing researches, knows up to date techniques, data collection methods and applications of various laboratory techniques used to construct effective vaccine prototypes and new antibacterial drugs
Shows the knowledge about the significance of experimental work in the field of biotechnology, especially in the field of infectious diseases.
Knows and understands the biochemical, cellular and molecular bases of the functions of prokaryotic microorganisms and the interactions between pathogens and host in respect of research concerning vaccinology and antibacterial therapy.
Is familiar with basic planning and performing genetic modifications of microorganisms using diverse strategies especially aimed at constructing effective antibacterial vaccine
Knows how to use knowledge concerning global processes of microorganisms to identify targets for antibacterial drugs
Abilities
Uses the advanced techniques of molecular genetics techniques for selection and targeted modifications of microorganisms.
Has knowledge of a modern language (Polish or English) sufficient for using electronic resources and scientific literature devoted to broadly defined bacterial genetics.
Is able to draw proper conclusions and interpret research results and discuss them in relation to the literature available; is able to explain basic mechanisms involved in induction of the infecious diseases and the mechanisms which create emerging strains of bacterial pathogens
Is able to study on his/her own on the study area.
Social competences
Understands the global burden of infecious diseases and the need for restriction of incresing prevalence of infecious diseases
Appreciates the significance of mathematic and statistic tools used for evaluation of experimental data and phenomena which happen in nature.
Is cautious and critical about mass-media information concerning bacterial genetics and its application.
Understands the need of communication to the society information about the newest achievements in the field of biotechnology, biology of microorganisms and is able to do that in a comprehensive way.

Attendence the lectures, preparing two presentations, participation in disccusion
