The aim of this conversatory is to highlight the importance of mineral and rock raw materials that have been used by the humans for centuries in the widely defined public space, including industry, especially building industry. Recognition of the physical and chemical properties of the rocks, their mining methods and deterioration processes is necessary to use the raw materials properly.
During the field trips, the students will analyse the application of the chosen raw material. They will consider the features, the properties as well as the correctness and the effectiveness of the its use in the specified branch of industry.
1. The elementary rock types, their origin and connected physical and chemical properties.
2. The elementary rock-forming minerals and their physical and chemical properties.
3. The plutonic rocks: their origin, composition, physical and chemical properties, mining methods, applications in the public space.
4. The volcanic rocks: their origin, composition, physical and chemical properties, mining methods, applications in the public space.
5. The sedimentary rocks: their origin, composition, physical and chemical properties, mining methods, applications in the public space.
6. The metamorphic rocks: their origin, composition, physical and chemical properties, mining methods, applications in the public space.
7. Application of the mineral raw materials in the building industry: cement, concrete etc.
8. Field trip: the rock and mineral raw materials in the public space.
9. Discussion on the basis of acquired knowledge on the written essays and multimedia presentations, the leading topic is the application of the chosen raw material.

Learning outcomes
The students can identify the basic rock types that are used In the public space and can evaluate their application. They are able to make the critical selection of available literature sources to compile the studied problem. The students acquire the skill of synthetic development of the collected literature in the form of essays. They get know how to prepare correctly the popular science multimedia presentation.
Assessment criteria
The course is credited based on: the student engagement during either the class lessons or the field trips, the evaluation of the written essay prepared by the student and their short summative talk in the form of multimedia presentation.
