Petrology of coal and dispersed organic matter in sedimentary rocks 1300-WPWSO
During the practical training, three forms of classes are planned: lectures, laboratory exercises (microscopic laboratories, vitrinite reflectivity laboratory) conducted by lecturers and self-made examinations of selected samples containing organic matter. The examinations will be conducted with the support and supervision of the teachers. During the practical training, the role of organic matter in the formation of coal deposits, ore deposits, and liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons will be discussed. The main methods of instrumental research of organic matter will be discussed, with particular emphasis on petrographic studies. Methods of petrographic description of organic matter in sedimentary rocks, principles of classification and identification of macerals will be presented. An important part of the practial classes will be learning the procedures for measuring vitrinite reflectivity in accordance with the rules of the ICCP (International Committee of Coal and Organic Petrology) and Polish and international standards.

Learning outcomes
The ability to independently use a literature sources of knowledge on petrography and diagenesis of organic matter in sedimentary rocks and in the field of economic geology.
The ability to identify macerals of organic matter in sedimentary rocks in accordance with the requirements of the ICCP (International Committee of Coal and Organic Petrology).
The ability to perform vitrinite reflectivity measurements in accordance with Polish and international standards.
The ability to assess the degree of maturity of organic matter based on the results of vitrinite reflectivity measurements.
The ability to prepare a concise report presenting results of petrographic examinations and measurements of vitrinite reflectivity.
Assessment criteria
The classes are graded based on a positive grade from a substantive assessment of the final report that summarizes the self-made petrographic research of organic matter.
