Essentials of petroleum geochemistry 1300-WPGNW
Course comprises:
1. Determining oil migration distances from source rocks to reservoirs
2. Estimation of hydrocarbon migration based on biomarkers and PAHs
3. Source rock formation, hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and entrapment
4. Compound-specific stable isotopes (carbon, hydrogen, sulphur)
5. Interpreting crude oil data:
a) Oil-to-oil correlations
b) Oil-to-source rock correlations
6. Aliphatic hydrocarbons (n-alkanes, isoprenoids, steranes, hopanes)
7. Aromatic hydrocarbons (aromatic steranes, aromatic carotenoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs])
8. Polar compounds (bacteriohopanoids [BHPs], GDGTs)
9. Geoporphyrins and maleimides
10. Asphaltenes
11. Gas-to-gas and gas-to-source rock correlations (examples of case studies)
12. Unconventional oil and gas deposits
13. Underground coal gasification
14. Heat, helium and other secondary products

Learning outcomes
The student will learn about the methodology and interpretation of geochemical data. The student will learn techniques for the geochemical correlation of oil-oil, oil-source rock, gas-gas and gas-source rock. The student will familiarize the methods and programs (e.g. Xcalibur, Chemstation, MassHunter) used to interpret aliphatic, aromatic and polar compounds. The student will learn about unconventional hydrocarbon deposits and coal gasification.
Assessment criteria
The examination requirements cover the scope of material presented at the lectures. The exam is in writing and includes a test and descriptive part.
Practical placement
none
