Geochemical modelling of groundwater 1300-WMGWP-GES
The lecture is designed to acquaint a student with:
- types of geochemical systems;
- phases and forms of a substance occurring in groundwater;
- types of reactions in hydrogeochemical systems;
- the terminology used in the field of geochemical modeling, including the fundamentals of chemical thermodynamics (the free enthalpy, enthalpy, thermodynamic potential, activity);
- historical development and fundamentals of classification of geochemical modeling of groundwater
- the meaning of scope and quality of input data (analytical field data and laboratory data, thermodynamic data and their consistency);
- the role of hydrological, mineralogical, thermodynamic and kinetic geochemical modeling;
- the use of isotope data in geochemical modeling of water, reactive transport modeling (local equilibrium assumptions);
- application and interpretation of speciation – solubility modeling results (use of speciation calculations in environmental issues; construction, use and interpretation of the solubility curves, solubility diagrams, stability field diagrams; assessment of the degree of saturation of water);
- the principles of conceptual modeling; calculation and verification of the correctness of the conceptual models;
- interpretation and application examples, mostly inverse mass balance modeling and “forward” modeling (evaporation, mixing, modeling of reaction paths ,etc.)
- the requirements and limitations of geochemical modeling and the current state of geochemical modeling of groundwater.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course (lectures) a student:
- knows the theoretical basis and methodology for geochemical modeling of groundwater;
- plans a range of physicochemical research of groundwater necessary to carry out the geochemical modeling of water;
- evaluates the usefulness of application of geochemical modeling of water to solve the task.
Assessment criteria
Requirements on the exam:
- knowledge of the material presented in the lectures,
- knowledge of the literature indicated by the lecturer.
Final credit for the subject based on the written elaboration about the selected topic of the lecture. Three justified absences are allowed.
