Limestones and their sedimentary environments 1300-WM-WSSP
During Practicum in the lecture form are presented recent sedimentary environments and facies, as well as fossil carbonate successions, depositional systems of carbonate platforms, cyclic sedimentation of carbonate successions and evolution of carbonate buildups. Practical part includes recognition of components (biotic and abiotic origin) and cements. Different systems of carbonate classification are presented, as well as basic facies schemes and interpretation of sedimentary environment are discussed. Basic features of diagenesis are introduced.

Learning outcomes
After the course, the student is capable to:
- analyze limestone microfacies
- recognize types of limestones and interpret their sedimentary environment
- distinguish biogenic and abiogenic components of limestones
- construct facies schemes
- describe each type of limestones
Assessment criteria
Practical exam in the form of complete description and interpretation of several rocks samples. Resit on the basis of re-examination in the practical form (description of thin sections). 2 absences allowed.
Practical placement
none
