Geochemistry of the Litosphere 1300-WGLK
During the course students become acquainted with:
a) main factors affecting the geochemical characteristics of the elements and their geochemical classification
b) chemical composition of individual geospheres
c) processes of elements differentiation in the magma environment and those behind the formation of the Earth’s crust
d) the flow of matter and heat in the upper part of the Earth's mantle
e) large geochemical cycles of selected elements occurring in the lithosphere and neighboring spheres of the Earth
f) geochemical characteristics of selected elements
g) soil-forming processes
h) selected geochemical environments (magmatic sulphide deposits, pegmatites, contact-metasomatic formations, polymetallic hydrothermal deposits, weathering zones of polymetallic deposits, weathering zones of sulphide deposits generating acid mine waters, laterites and weathering metal deposits, anoxic zones)
i) geochemical impact of exploitation and processing of mineral resources on the natural environment
j) application of geochemical research in search for deposits

Learning outcomes
After the classes, the student:
- understands the geochemical processes taking place in the lithosphere
- knows how to link geochemical processes taking place in the lithosphere with the general circulation of elements on Earth
- can explain the behavior of selected elements in the lithosphere
- can predict migration paths for selected elements
- knows how to characterize selected geochemical environments in detail
- can perform the basic interpretation of geochemical data
- can use geochemical data in the search for deposits
- can use the scientific literature
- can set and verify hypotheses
- predicts the effects of human interference in the natural environment
- can explain the mechanisms of the formation of natural and anthropogenic geochemical anomalies
- combines information from different sources to verify existing views and hypotheses
