Information technology in geology and the basics of GIS 1300-OTIGG1L
During the course conducted in a workshop format, students acquire the knowledge about basic software packages, which in fact will be used by them till the end of their university studies.
Throughout the classes dedicated to Excel software, students learn e.g. how to use a spreadsheet, create various charts, manage a big amount of data and prepare data for further use in GIS software.
For the duration of CorelDRAW training students are acquainted with the basics of creation and processing of vector graphics.
GIS software training allows students to take advantage of the fact that the vast majority of data and geological information has a spatial aspect. Students learn the methods of preparation of their own data, processing existing data, as well as ways of presentation of the results of an analysis.
In detail, the course covers the following topics:
- the principles of functioning of Excel software and its basic tools;
- data preparation;
- basic statistics of datasets;
- working with a big amount of data;
- creation of various charts and their distinguishing;
- the preparation of data for its further use in ArcGIS software;
- the principles of functioning of CorelDRAW software and its basic tools;
- creation of compositions based on vector and raster graphics;
- the principles of importing objects created in other software, exporting compositions to other file formats;
- the fundamentals of functioning, interface and basic tools of GIS software;
- types and models of spatial data used with GIS software;
- the ways of data presentation (symbolization);
- data sources;
- the methods of data acquisition;
- coordinate systems and map projections;
- georeferencing and rectifying images;
- the methods of vector and raster data modelling;
- creation of 3D surface model;
- spatial analysis;
- compilation of the results of spatial analysis;
- the foundations of proper preparation of map appendices.

Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course a student:
In the area of knowledge:
– knows the methods of research and presentation of the results of studies in natural sciences based on widely used Microsoft Excel, CorelDRAW and ArcGIS software; understands which of these programs is suitable for specific applications.
– is familiar with information systems, rules of spatial data acquisition and use; works freely in GIS environment; knows the characteristics of spatial data, as well as the principles of its modelling and visualization.
In the area of skills:
– applies knowledge of GIS terminology; is acquainted with Polish and English basic terms and names of tools, uses them effectively.
– selects proper data models to solve scientific problems or to prepare research projects and interpret their results; uses basic tools dedicated to vector and raster models and if necessary, converts between data models.
– knows how to prepare workflow, and thus perform spatial analysis with Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS software
In the area of social skills:
– understands the necessity of continuous upgrading professional skills and looking for new techniques for solving scientific problems through self-study;
– recognizes and applies GIS technology in the fields of study different from theses presented during the course.
Assessment criteria
The final grade will consist of:
1. two brief tests conducted during the course,
2. a single-handed project prepared at the end of the course,
3. the intensity of the student's participation in the course.
In order to receive a good grade, it is compulsory to prepare all the requested appendices correctly.
Practical placement
none
