Basics of geochemistry 1300-OPGCHW-GEP
During the lecture, students will learn about:
- the origin and evolution of the chemical composition of the Universe
- geochemical characteristics of the Sun and the solar planetary system
- the formation, structure and evolution of the Earth,
- the division of elements due to their geochemical characteristics
- chemical elements in geospheres: inner and outer core, D’’ sphere, mantle and its evolution, oceanic and continental crust, Earth and Sun composition vs meteorite composition
- selected geochemical Earth's environments and the mechanism of the circulation of elements between them (i.e. igneous, metamorphic, hypergenic and hydrothermal)
- issues related to the atmosphere, composition and its evolution as well as the dangers of its pollution (ozone hole, greenhouse effect, acid rain, particles in the atmosphere- cosmic, natural terrestrial and anthropogenic)
- issues related to the hydrosphere and water circulation in geosphere; migration and accumulation of the chemical elements
- physical and chemical weathering processes; influence of the redox potential and pH on the element migration,
- the great geochemical cycles of the Earth
- the role of living organisms in geochemical processes
- application of geochemistry in the recognition of geochemical processes, deposit prospection, protection of the environment and human health, as well as in the sciences related to geology, i.e. archeology
- the modern analytical methods
Type of course

Learning outcomes
Student gets information on geochemical history of Cosmos and Earth, recognizes processes of element migration, and places and types of their accumulation, mechanisms of differentiation of the selected isotopes in geological environments and practical use of the main isotope methods for studying of the past geological processes, the isotope age determinations inclusively.
Assessment criteria
Written exam in the form of a test with open-ended questions, questions to be completed, including multiple-choice questions.
Practical placement
none
