An introduction to Nuclear Chemistry and Physics 1200-1CHJWCHFW1
During the lecture, students will learn about the structure of the atomic nucleus and reactions that it undergoes. The concept of the stability of isotope will be introduced. The issues of nuclear fission, cross-sections and resonance as well as the detection of ionizing radiation will be discussed. Basic issues concerning the interaction of radiation with matter as well as its biological effects will be introduced. Radiopharmaceuticals, their types, types of radionuclide generators as well as isotopes used in industry and nuclear medicine. Chemical and physical methods of isotope enrichment will be duscussed. The lecture will also present key issues related to the operation of nuclear reactors from the point of view of physics and chemists. Strategies for the management and processing of radioactive waste will be discussed. The lecture will end with a discussion of test nuclear explosions, nuclear accidents and incidents in the world.

Learning outcomes
After the lecture, the student will be able to characterize alpha, beta, gamma decay and radiation, fission, methods leading to obtain selected isotopes. The student will be able to describe their application in industry and medicine. The student will be able to present the stages of the nuclear fuel cycle.
Assessment criteria
Written exam, test with closed and open questions. The lecture is passed if at least 50% of correct answers are obtained.
3 absences are allowed.
