Technology and design of new materials, laboratory 1100-3INZ16
Laboratory includes the performing of four exercises in a variety of research groups at the university (Faculty of Physics and Faculty of Chemistry) and the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of High Pressure Physics Unipress Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology and the Institute of Electron Technology. The subject of exercise is associated with the expertise in modern technologies of nanomaterials in research groups that belong to the forefront of world leading research in the development of these technologies and also in research of materials received. The range of technologies include methods such as MBE (molecular beam epitaxy), MOVPE (molecular organic vapor phase deposition), ALD (atomic layer deposition), microwave solvothermal synthesis, micropulling, synthesis of nanomaterials in thermal plasma stream, synthesis of nanoparticles by Brust method, chemical synthesis of liquid crystal compounds. Received materials include semiconductor layer structures, ordered eutectic composites (photonic crystals), layered materials (graphene), zero-dimensional nano-objects, or structures of the liquid crystals. In addition to the technological processes, students become familiar with the processing of nanostructures in cleanrooms.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge of a few nanotechnologies, including own experience with these technologies, resulting from active participation in the technological processes. Training in design of own structures at the nanoscale. Orientation in the labor market in Warsaw.
Assessment criteria
Students are preparing for the labs by reading the provided literature. During the lab, the leading researchers discuss with students all the issues, basing on the acquired by students their theoretical knowledge, and also further explain the technological processes carried out with the participation of students. Students under the guidance of leading researchers characterize the received material. At the end of labs there is a summarizing conversation. Students are graded on the basis of the conversation and their activity during the labs.
Practical placement
The laboratory is extremely helpful for students when deciding on the range of issues and place of of the practical training during studies.
Bibliography
The literature needed for students to prepare for the labs is elaborated by researchers who lead the individual exercises and is available for students at least one week before the start of the exercise. It includes both the handouts prepared by the researchers, as well as fragments of books, publications, or fragments of diploma and PhD theses.
