Quantum Theory for Mathematicians and Computer Scientists 1000-1M26QT
The course is divided in two parts. The basis is always present and contains the core material. Extensions depend on interests and preferences of students - they will be able to choose which topics they want to learn at the end of the course.
Basis of the course (always present)
1. Experiments – light and electrons as waves or particles
2. Old theory – brief discussion of classical mechanics
3. Basic principles of quantum mechanics
4. The free Schrödinger equation
5. A particle in a square well
6. Perspectives on the spectral theorem (with full proof for bounded self-adjoint operators)
7. The harmonic oscillator
Extensions (chosen by students, taking available time into account)
1. Quantum theory in topology
2. Feynman path integral
3. Lie groups, angular momentum and spin
4. Quantum theory in computer science
Remarks:
1. This is a monographic course for MSc (and PhD) students of mathematics, computer science, and ML
(a) 2nd and 3rd year BSc students of mathematics and computer science are also welcome (ECTS points cannot be used towards BSc electable courses, but they can be stored and used at MSc level)
2. This is an elective course for BSc students of physics
(a) This course is not equivalent to the standard quantum mechanics at Faculty of Physics and cannot be used as a substitute
3. This course is available at Inter-faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences as:
(a) Course in mathematics and computer science at MSc level
(b) Course in physics at BSc level (not equivalent to standard quantum mechanics at Faculty of Physics)

Assessment criteria
1. There will be a written exam based on the material from classes and an oral exam based on the material from lectures. (There might be a possibility - dependent on the number of students - that some students will get a proposal off the grade after the written exam.)
2. The most important criterion for the grade will be the level of understanding of the quantum mechanics and the interplay between physics and mathematics
