Economics of Towns and Regions 4208-M1EKM-OG
The aim of the lecture is to present contemporary tendencies in shaping the development of cities and regions. The lecture presents theoretical achievements in this topic based on domestic and foreign literature and supplement this knowledge by showing empirical results of the most recent studies, research projects, including those implemented by the EUROREG.
Issues discussed during the lecture are divided into three blocks. The first one concerns contemporary trends in social and economic development of regions and cities with particular emphasis on the importance of innovation in regional and local development and the development of the information society. The second thematic block concerns the role of science in the economic development of the cities and regions and the importance of networking in particular between the science and the business sector. The third block is about the localisation factors of economic activities, the role of foreign direct investment in local and regional development. Moreover the definitions of peripheral regions and the factors of their development and policy implications are discussed. The last block of issues focused on cities as economic space, lectures acquaint students with the dynamics of urban development and the phenomenon of metropolisation processes. the important part of the lecture are dynamic presentations of students essays prepare in close collaboration with the lecturer during the seminar.

Knowledge:
(1) Characterises the issues related to the cities and regions functioning in the field of economy. (2) Elaborates the theories and scientific approaches used in formulating and solving problems regarding the spatial development. (3) Analyses the connections between the economic and social, natural or political problems in various spatial scales.
(4) Describes the institutions supporting the entrepreneurship development in regional, national and international scale. (5) Characterises the impact of the international tendencies on the entrepreneurship development in cities and regions, including the field of the transnational corporations activity, increased innovation and enhancement of the meaning of human capital.
Assessment criteria
Write and present an essey on the developmental problems of contemporary cities accordingly to the guidelines (5 pages+literature).
