From modernity to postmodernity. Transformation of Western societies in the 20th and 21st centuries 4100-ODNOWDOPONO-OG
During the course students learn about the processes responsible for social and cultural change in the 20th and 21st centuries. The issues discussed include:
- The birth of psychoanalysis
- The rise of mass culture and pop culture
- The transition from modernism to postmodernism
- Rebellion and counter-culture of the 1960's
- Secularization
- Consumerism
- Postcolonialism
- The rise of the Internet
Through reading academic texts on sociology, psychology and culture studies students gain knowledge of selected social phenomena and currents of thought that emerged over the last century. Emphasis is placed on how these issues affect the perception of individuals in society and interpersonal interactions. As a result, students understand the behaviours, opinions and attitudes that characterize individuals in modern Western societies, they are able to indicate their origins and ideological foundations.

K_W02 The student knows and understands the basic processes underlying social and cultural transformations in the 20th and 21st centuries
K_W03 The student knows the basic terminology related to modernity, postmodernity, identity of the individual, and social interactions
Skills:
K_U03 The student is able to perform observations and interpretations of social transformations, and to analyse their connections with different systems of values and ideologies.
K_U05 The student is able to use basic theoretical approaches to identify motives and patterns of human behaviours, lifestyles, opinions.
K_U10 The student is able to formulate substantive arguments using the views of other authors and formulate conclusions.
K_U11 The student is able to appreciate the variety of opinions presented in subject literature and during the discussions, and use them as a source of inspiration rather than a threat to their own system of values.
Social competence:
K_K01 The student is aware of their level of skills and knowledge,
K_K02 The student self-assesses their competencies and sets the direction of their own development
K_K06 The student recognizes and formulates moral problems and ethical dilemmas related to life in society, seeks best solutions to deal with them
