History of Latin America I (Pre-Colombian and Colonial History of Latin America 3305-HAL-11w
This is a basic course during which students learn about the history of pre-Hispanic America, focusing on:
- the Mesoamerican cultures, such as the Olmecs, Teotihuacan, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, cultures of the Gulf Coast, and especially of the Mayas and Aztecs
- Andean cultures, among them Chavin, Paracas, Moche, Nazca, Tiahuanaco, Huari and especially the Incas
In the second semester, the students will learn the European situation which allowed the fifteenth and sixteenth-century geographical discoveries and conquests organized by the Spanish and Portuguese crowns. The subjects to be studied include the process of formation of the new reality of colonial America, the processes of cultural “mestizaje” as the effect of evangelization and meeting in America people coming from three (or even four) different continents, as well as the reaction of the autochthonous people to the new reality. Also the themes of administration, management and economics of Colonial America, until the wars of independence (the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century), will be studied.
