Introduction to Cultural Studies 3301-L1ICSW
The purpose of the course is to:
1. Familiarize the students with the general issues of cultural studies, taking the point of view of cultural anthropology.
2. Prepare students for eventual handling of cultural topics in their diploma work.
3. Enable the students to function better in English-speaking cultures.
4. Make the students participate in their own culture more consciously.
The topics:
1. The concept of culture; culture and nature; culture and communication
2. Culture change - acculturation, diffusion.
3. Culture and biology - the way human body is used in culture.
4. Material Culture - the roleof artefacts in culture.
5. Material Culture - Culinary culture: Food, foodways; organization of food production.
6. Cultural Geography
7. Marriage, family.
8. Magic, religion.
9. Dimensions of culture.
10. Art as symbolic culture.
11. Worldview - The self in culture.
12. Worldview - Time and space in culture.
13. Worldview - Norms, values, patterns of culture.
14. Intercultural communication.
15. Theories and methods in cultural studies.

Learning outcomes
On obtaining the credit the student:
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knows the basic concepts of the science of culture;
2. Perceives cultures in their whole complexity as systems (on the basis of cultural anthropology).
SKILLS:
1. Has general orientation in the problems of cultures of English-speaking countries
2. Can set a research problem within the cultural studies of Anglo-Saxon countries.
3. Can undertake the in-depth study of culture in his diploma project.
4. Can participate consciously in his own national culture.
ATTITUDES:
1. Displays tolerance towards other cultures.
2. Respects divergence of cultural behaviors (A well as individual behaviors).
Assessment criteria
Written test (of 90 minutes' - 2 class hours' - duration) consisting of closed and one open question in which the student may employ his knowledge to discuss an indicated cultural problem
