Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student:
Knowledge:
- has a systematic knowledge of the history of Muslim Spain until the fall of the Cordoban caliphate and the relevant historical sources
- has a systematic knowledge of the social and cultural aspects of the history of al-Andalus until mid-Vth/XIth century.
Skills:
- is able to argue the cultural uniqueness of al-Andalus compared to the classical Islamic world and early medieval Europe, as well as show its roots
- is able to specify the most important cultural and social processes occuring in al-Andalus from the VIIIth to the XIth century
- is generally aware of the history and culture of the Jews of al-Andalus
- is able to specify the causes of the flourishment of the Cordoban caliphate and of its fall
Competences:
- is aware of the limitations of knowledge of the history of al-Andalus imposed by the nature of the historical sources and understands the necessity of their constant study and re-interpretation
- is aware of the cultural uniqueness of al-Andalus in comparison to early medieval Europe and Muslim world
Assessment criteria
Regular assiduity and a test administered during the last class.
