Archaeology of the Barbarians’ fashion. From smith to jeweler 3101-DWKOW-OG
The aim of the course is to present the diversity of dress and its accessories of barbarian peoples living in Central Europe in the times of the Roman Empire (1st–5th century AD). Contrary to the negative associations that this term might raise, these communities were characterized by a developed culture and production, e.g. goldsmithing, or even jewelry. For it was a period of their prosperity, connected, among others, with maintaining contacts with the Roman Empire. As a result, we have a wealth of sources that allow reconstruction of fashion (sometimes very sophisticated!) and of appearance of Barbarians. The data consists of numerous archaeological finds (e.g. elements of clothing discovered in graves or accompanying the so-called bog bodies) that are confronted with the image of the Barbarians emerging from ancient written texts and visual arts. Basing on this, one can indicate a number of interesting phenomena occurring in the fashion of the time, such as its regional diversity (of an ethnographic character), or on the contrary - the formation of inter-regional fashion of tribal elites, including gold and silver ornaments.
During the course, the emphasis is put on characterizing the variability of the ornaments and elements of the outfit, both in time and in space. An important element of the course is the issue of intercultural connections, both within the barbarian Europe and contacts with the Roman Empire, resulting in changes in fashion (analysis of various stylistic trends, mainly visible on the example of metal elements of the outfit). In addition, advanced goldsmithing techniques are also discussed, with the help of which intricate, silver and gold jewelry of the Goths was made. This topic is also related to the issue of access to raw materials discussed in the course of classes, and the methods of their acquisition by barbarian tribes.
First, the students will get acquainted with the basics of protohistoric archeology (terminology, chronology, and main categories of artefacts related to fashion). Another topic is the clothing of a Roman citizen and the fashion of inhabitants of Roman provinces (especially the ones located along the Danube). On the one hand, it will allow us to better understand the image of the Barbarians transmitted in ancient sources (accentuating mainly differences from the Mediterranean customs), and on the other - to get the knowledge of the stylistics of dress accessories, which undoubtedly inspired the craftsmen from the North. Next, the most important antique written sources concerning the appearance of the Barbarians and their presentation in the visual arts are discussed, and are confronted with, i.a. the findings of the so-called bog bodies from western Baltic. The first of the aspects (chronological one) can be defined as research on the history of applied arts (style/fashion). The second one (chorological) has a cultural significance and is the basis for the ethnographic interpretation (diversity of dress and ornaments for individual tribes). Subsequent classes are scheduled in the cultural and chronological order and they concern the diversity of dress and stylistics of ornaments in different zones of the European Barbaricum, with particular emphasis on the Polish lands. The upper timeframe of the subject matter of the classes is determined by the Migration Period (end of 4th to 6th century AD), when mass population displacements occurred, resulting in the interruption of the current cultural cycle of the Late Iron Age and in the collapse of settlement structure in the vast areas of Europe.
Classes are conducted as a multimedia lecture, supplemented with a presentation of original archaeological artefacts or their copies.
Students interested in this subject can begin to get to know it already in the winter semester, as part of the lecture entitled "Prehistoric fashion in the light of archaeology (from the oldest times until the birth of Christ). Technology – diversity – interpretation", during which a number of issues related to the ways of producing items of clothing and their meaning in prehistoric interpretations will be discussed.
