Descriptive grammar of Lithuanian 3020-BA2GOL
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic range of traditional and recent linguistic knowledge of the modern Lithuanian language. The course covers the basic knowledge of the following topics:
Grammatical categories of nominative and verbal words. Phonetics and phonology. Prosody. Principles of phonetic transcription. Morphology and word variety. Declension systems of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals. The conjugation system. The conjugation of participles. Vocabulary. Varieties of derivation, characteristic of the Lithuanian language. Syntax. Types of statements. Syntactic compounds. Syntactic series. Word order of the Lithuanian language. Classification of Lithuanian dialects with elements of dialectology history. Lithuanian dialects on the territory of Poland.
The course lasts two semesters and ends with a written exam. The prerequisite for taking the exam is attendance and participation in classes, as well as writing and passing an annual paper.

On completing the course the student:
(KNOWLEDGE)
- has a basic knowledge of the place and importance of philology in relation to other human sciences and of the subject and methodological specificity of Baltic philology;
- understands the complex nature of the Lithuanian language;
- has a basic knowledge of the phonetic, grammatical and syntactic structure of the Lithuanian language;
- has a structured general knowledge including terminology and methodologies of Lithuanian linguistics;
- knows basic linguistic terminology in Lithuanian and Polish.
(SKILLS)
- searches, analyses and selects, uses information from written and electronic sources;
- knows how to use basic theoretical approaches and concepts typical for philology;
- reads texts of a scientific nature and correctly applies the linguistic terminology learnt;
- reads texts of a scientific nature and correctly applies the linguistic terminology learnt; has the ability to select arguments appropriately, uses the views of other authors, has the ability to formulate conclusions correctly;
- describes selected linguistic problems in a manner consistent with the formal requirements for philological studies;

- accepts the need to observe ethical norms of scientific work;
- is aware of the knowledge he/she has acquired and knows the extent of the skills he/she has acquired;
- understands the need for continuous learning.
Assessment criteria
Attendance and activity in class, independent preparation for class.
The subject ends with a written examination.
