Fake news - the truth and falsehood in an era of global information 2700-L-D-FN-OG
Classes are carried out as part of IBIZA (Interdisciplinary Database of Internet Academic Classes) on the educational platform available at: http://kampus.uw.edu.pl
The course is intended for undergraduate students of all university faculties interested in theoretical, research and social aspects of the so-called "fake news". The basic material analyzed during the classes will consist of media pieces (in various forms), with addition of research reports and theoretical analyses of this phenomenon. The context for our considerations will be issues related to the modern information environment such as: global information flow, public sphere, information and media competence.
During the course the following topics will be discussed and developed:
• global public sphere or closed bubbles - contemporary information flow,
• inequalities in access to media and information,
• post-truth - introduction to theory,
• origin and diverse understanding of the term "fake news",
• "fake news" in selected countries of the world - general situation and case studies,
• how to recognize "fake news" in various media types,
• infobrokering and fact-checking - how to deal with false information,
• anti-fake news initiatives.
In addition to the issues mentioned above, students will also have the opportunity to present and analyze selected examples of "fake news" appearing in the media.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student:
KNOWLEDGE:
• understands the meaning of the term "fake news" in a variety of scientific and social contexts,
• understands and is able to explain the basic concepts related to disinformation and information manipulation,
• knows and is able to explain the theoretical assumptions about the theory of public sphere, postruth, digital competence,
• knows and is able to describe basic information on the situation of the attitude towards the media and the use of the media in selected countries.
SKILLS:
• can indicate the basic distinguishing features of false information, the so-called "fake news",
• can distinguish and indicate "fake news" in various media messages,
• has basic skills in searching and verifying information.
OTHER COMPETENCES:
• understands the importance of valid data and news for society,
• knows and adheres to the ethical principles related to searching, using, processing and sharing data and information.
Assessment criteria
The student is evaluated after each class. Control of the teaching process involves partial checking of acquired knowledge (e.g. test questions, short written statements, presentations, etc.). At the end of the semester, an oral oraz written test will be conducted online.
