Social Pedagogy 2300-PSPO
The beginnings of social pedagogy and its development in Poland and internationally. The links with other social sciences, the place in pedagogical fields, the characteristics and uniqueness of the subject.
Main definitions. What is common, what is different from other social perspectives in terms of research and analysis, in the way of seeing human being's connection with community and with social environments. The focus on mutual educational influence of the individual and its social environment. The explanation of terms such as: social environment, human potential (human capital), social relations and social tights.
The well known Polish social pedagogues: their perspectives of social pedagogy and their work, influence in its development: Helena Radlińska, Aleksander Kamiński, Ryszard Wroczyński, Stanisław Szacki, Kazimierz Lisiecki, Janusz Korczak, others (living today). What were their ideals, their concepts of education in the local environments. What elements they saw and included in their proposals for change, how they tried to implement these ideas? How did it influence current solutions and perspectives?
The environment - the ways of research. The diagnosis of the social situation, situation of groups and individuals, analysis of the influence factors, and relations among people, attitudes, educational elements in life. Prognostics for desired change in the education in local environments. Observing and evaluating the change. The links between social pedagogy and social work in terms of: care, support, intervention, prophylactics, resocialisation, empowerment etc.
Family as the socio-educational environment in the times of change, The structure and the functions of the family. Types of families. Changes in family functioning. The dangers and disorganization of the family in modern society. The problems: single parenthood, the aggressive behaviors, violence, the victims in the family, homosexual parents, etc. Generation changes, the changes in family patterns, family and technology, family as being together but separated by technology, interests and individual lifestyles, families facing migration issues etc.
Peer groups as the socio-educational environment in the times of change, The youth in times of change, the problems and issued of youth groups: the dangers and problems. The violence among youth and children, sub-cultures, drug addition, prostitution, alcoholism, the youth and unemployment, the youth and culture of entertainment. The patterns, the ways of educating and communicating with youth, aspirations, attitudes, youth activists etc.
The job as the socio-educational environment. Learning by doing, getting experience, the role of unemployment and employment, the competition and stress in jobs, changing jobs, "migration for pay" - how all this creates the environment for individual growth. Ways that jobs help people grow - team work, sill and knowledge development, support to families, new ways of treating employees etc.
Local community - as the socio-educational environment. Regional education, the role of tradition, symbols, language in educating individuals and groups, the role of community in building identity, social capital and its mobilizing.
Human being in danger. Individuals and groups excluded, marginalized or threatened by exclusion. The disabled, the homeless, the poor, the elderly, the abandoned children. People who feel lonely and left alone by others.
The challenges of XXI century: globalization, the rolling of information technology, uniformity, consumerism. Questions of identity, the pace of changes and ability to adaptation, in Access to information and services.
Problems of the future and pedagogical concerns and questions: the perceived future problems, the role of pedagogy, the chances and possibilities and the threats and dangers.

Learning outcomes
After completion of training the student will:
- know the basic terms and concepts in the field of social pedagogy,
- know the basic facts of history (the development and changes) of social pedagogy in Poland over the centuries
- be able to characterize pedagogy as an academic discipline,
- know its precursors and their concepts of education in an environment,
- understand the environmental determinants of education and development and the possibility / need for research, creation and transformation of human environment,
- understand the importance and specificity of primary-school educational environment in social development undertakings;
- perceive and understand the role and tasks of social pedagogy in the context of contemporary social change (in the local and global).
Assessment criteria
To be admitted to the final examination of the subject, student must meet the following conditions:
- Attendance (maximum of two absences, each additional include on call)
- Active participation in discussions,
- Included in the final test (written).
The final exam is written - includes content from lectures and some additional readings.
