MS2 - Popular culture and media 2300-MS2-ASK-II-KUL
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the following topics :
1 mass culture and popular culture - definitions, ways of understanding , origin , characteristics , stages of development. Characteristics of the different systems of culture.
2 different stance to mass culture and popular culture / Frankfurt School , structuralism , semiology , Marxism , and other / . Criticism , defense, affirmation , and ways to use popular culture / politics , ideologies , marketing / .
3 Transformation of contemporary culture , the human condition - a participant in the face of today's culture expansion of consumer culture and the commercialization of different areas of culture.
4 The evolution of the media over the centuries ; development of new communication technologies and the transformation of culture; typographic culture , audiovisual culture and the Internet .
5 Theories and concepts of the social impact of the media; constructing messages and their reception by the participants in today's culture. The process of communication , character and meaning , symbols , icons and myths of contemporary audiovisual culture .
6 Persuasion and propaganda in the audiovisual media - basic phenomena , mechanisms and issues . Political marketing and entertainment media as a way of achieving the objectives of the ideological , political and commercial - an attempt to reflect critically
7 Popular culture , the media , education - selected issues :
• Children and young people as participants in culture today - diagnosis of the situation
• Children and young people against consumer culture and various forms of advertising
• images of evil , aggression and violence in the audiovisual media as a pedagogical issue

Learning outcomes: After the course the student knows how to:
• define technical terms related to the theory of mass culture, popular culture and the media, indicate stages of development trends of contemporary media culture and social communication, and to identify the most important phenomena of this area
• analyze, classify, compare processes and phenomena constituting the basic systems of culture and various types of communication media
• recognize and interpret phenomena discussed range from the pedagogical point of view and formulate own critical evaluation of mass culture, popular and mass media
Assessment criteria
Assessment:
- Prepare for classes and knowledge of the content of reading
- Activity during seminars related to the subject matter / initiate and participate in discussions, reflections on the discussed problems /
- Honouring / term / from selected written work and proper preparation of papers previously agreed or multimedia presentations
- Attendance at konwersatoriach and personal culture of the student.
Detailed and current conditions for completion of the course the student determines the course instructor - always at the beginning of classes

* The release for this exam is to get credit for the course "Popular culture and media."
