Geology – specialized academic tutoring 2019 1300-WGSTA
Geology – specialized academic tutoring is an individualized form of learning as regular one-to-one sessions with a supervisor. Groups comprise of 1 to 3 students. The sessions are focused on a discussion within a subject proposed by the tutor, which may evolve according to the interests of the tutees. Both the tutee and the tutor may renounce from further tutorials after the first two scheduled sessions. A full cycle comprises 8 two-hour tutoring sessions per two weeks. Successive sessions are focused on discussing and working out issues related to the subject settled during the first session.

Learning outcomes
During the tutorials, the student realizes at least 3 of the following effects (depending on the subject of the tutorials and the assessment method):
- understands and is capable of explaining geological processes and phenomena within the frame of the subject of the tutoring sessions;
- by conducting geological projects, the student knows how to identify problems and proposes methods of their solution;
- applies modern information technologies;
- is concerned about the reliability and credibility of his work;
- is capable of analyzing the course of geological processes, indicating mutual relationships, and analyzing factors hampering the processes;
- can write and correctly illustrate a scientific essay based on literature studies and data from the internet within a subject agreed on with the tutor;
- can report the selected subject in form of a multimedia presentation;
- can report the main theses of a scientific report in form of a multimedia presentation;
- knows a foreign language at a B2 level and has linguistic competence to read and understand foreign-language scientific references;
- understands the need to report updated geological knowledge in the form of presentations and classification reports;
- understands the need for life-long learning.
Assessment criteria
The course is assessed by attendance in all sessions, each time documented by the tutor in form of a ‘card of individual tutoring sessions’. Additionally, the final grade comprises the preparation of at least one essay, presentation or project, and assessment of work and performance of the student. The essays/presentations/projects are marked with a grade and their number is fixed by the tutor during the first session.
