Essential Philological Skills 3700-FNL2-WDJ-C-AL
The seminar is addressed to everyone who is interested in the way of functioning the language in society and the way of doing research in this field.
During classes, students will learn the basic concepts of linguistics and semiotics, they also learn the problems of description of natural language. In this context, key issues in general linguistics will be discussed, starting from the essence and structure of the language. We will focus on the following topics:
The essence of the language and its features. The concept of a sign. The classification of the signs. Definition of natural language and its elements. The character of the natural language (conventionality, abstractness, phonicity, universality, polysicality).
Linguistics as a scientific discipline. Linguistics disciplines. Place of linguistics among the humanities.
Social nature of the natural language (stratification of the natural language on the example of Polish; comparison of the regional and social diversity of the Polish language and selected Slavic languages; national language and dialects).
Structure of the language system (the concept of structure; basic assumptions of structuralism; the system and the use of the system; levels of the language system).
Concepts of meaning and various research methods. Reference concepts (psychologism, denotation and connotation concepts, meaning – text, cognitivism, linguistic picture of the world, critical discourse analysis). Non-differential concepts (meaning in logical approach, natural semantic meta-language, operational concepts of meaning).
Vocabulary as a system.
The functions of language and speaking. Text, statement, discourse. Communication act. Basic (communicative) functions of signs.
Theory of speech acts and its conceptual apparatus. Structure and types of speech acts. Direct and indirect speech acts. Meanings transmitted indirectly – presupposition and implication.
Basics of psycholinguistics and cultural linguistics.
History of linguistics and Indo-European Studies. Port Royale, Ferdynand de Saussure. Neogrammarian. Structuralism. American linguistics. Sapir, Bloomfield, Chomsky. Cognitive Science.
Typological linguistics. Classification of ethnic and auxiliary languages. Historical classification of world languages. Family, group, language league. Language families of Europe. Language and writing; alphabets of the world.

Kryteria oceniania
The basis for passing the course is:
a) class attendance (students have the right to two absences per semester),
b) active participation in classes,
c) performing tasks related to classes on an ongoing basis,
d) written colloquium from the material discussed during the classes.
