CTM2 - Science education 2300-GPTE-CTM2-SE
The main elements of the course will include: theoretical basis of the Scientific Method, differences between science and pseudoscience, designing inspiring lessons without a professional laboratory (using low-cost equipment), multidisciplinary character of science education, different teaching strategies, inspiring children to independently pursue research projects, using resources such as science centers, libraries, etc., reading scientific articles, discussing new trends in science education: STEM, STEAM, Recommendations of the European Parliament and of the Council on key competences for lifelong learning, etc..

Efekty kształcenia
Students will be expected to:
- know the Scientific Method
- know safety rules during science lessons
- know how to create a low-cost laboratory
- know how to design an experiment which is meaningful for teaching scientific concepts,
- show some passion for teaching a chosen scientific topic
Students will be able to:
- plan an independent research unit or a long term research project
- build a scenario of integrated activity including science education
Kryteria oceniania
The course assessment consists of two parts:
1) active participation + teaching a chosen scientific topic to the peers +
conducting an experiment (or experiments) using the Scientific Method
2) submitting one set of lesson plans concerning one chosen key skill in the field of science education
The set:
- should combine 3 to 5 working days with a group of children selected by you (form kindergarten do 3rd grade) (3 p.),
- should be in accordance with the national standards applicable to the country where the lessons will take place (3 p.),
- the objective of these lessons should focus on one of the simple laboratory skills, and small individual research project (3 p.),
- the description of every lesson should contain: clearly stated objectives for the students, daily description of the activities carried out, the methods and class organization, any necessary materials or equipment and methods of evaluating students’ achievements as well as the teacher’s effectiveness (18 p.),
- should be original and based on contemporary science knowledge (3 p.).
