Programme of studies:

Studies in Psychology is a five-year master's academic programme in psychology conducted in English.

A unique programme of classes typically taking place in small groups and in an international environment provides the opportunity to acquire a universal education and a range of practical skills. Psychology in English taught at The University of Warsaw is multidirectional and interdisciplinary studies that develop an openness to various ideas, teach exploration and taking into account various types of argumentation.

Psychology programme of study is characterised by relative flexibility, which means that students, within certain limits, can shape their own schedule of classes and their own learning profile. This goal is achieved by providing a broad range of electives and specialisation courses in various areas of psychology to choose from.

Specializations

By the end of the third year of study, the students choose a specialisation from the four offered:

  • Clinical psychology — path Psychotherapy
  • Clinical psychology — path Neuropsychology and neuroscience
  • Business psychology
  • Experimental Social Psychology.

Important information

Classes are conducted typically in the Faculty of Psychology Building at ul. Stawki 5/7 in Warsaw, although some specialisation and optional classes may take place in external institutions such as hospitals or research institutes. The average size of course group is 20-25 people, with a total of over 150 students from 25 different countries studying simultaneously at WISP. This allows not only to acquire knowledge in an international and multicultural environment but also for personal contact with lecturers, which provides many opportunities for personal development. Both lecturers and administrative staff know the names of the students, which contributes to a pleasant and productive atmosphere.

Graduate's silhouette

The aim of the studies is to prepare future graduates to describe and explain the complex mechanisms of human functioning in the modern world.

The program of studies provides knowledge in the field of academic psychology and enables further professional development of graduates both in the area of scientific research and application activities. In addition, through everyday contact with students from around the world, graduates of English language courses acquire unique cultural competencies more and more desirable on the international labour market.

In the course of the programme, students gain thorough and reliable knowledge about various theoretical approaches explaining human behaviour and learn modern research and computational methods.

In addition, students acquire practical psychological and interpersonal skills, as well as learn how to plan empirical research, carefully analyse, correctly interpret, and present their results. A principal goal of education is to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to reflect on the analysed phenomena and processes, as well as the need to continuously improve knowledge and professional competence of the students.

Moreover, a fundamental task in shaping future psychologists is to develop interpersonal competencies, the ability to collaborate in a team and the ability to apply psychological knowledge in everyday life.

Graduates of “Psychology” receive the masters degree and professional title of a psychologist, which allows them to undertake work in various types of medical, educational, research or business institutions, etc. Graduates may pursue their education as part of third-cycle doctoral and post-graduate studies.

Learning outcomes

The graduate accomplished the following learning outcomes defined for their course of studies:
a) Knowledge:
● Knows specifics of the scientific language of psychology. Has in-depth knowledge of the differences in methods and concepts used in psychology and other related sciences. Knows the history of development of psychological thought.
● Understands the concept of the scientific method in the context of psychology.
● Knows statistical methods used in current psychology research.
● Has in-depth knowledge of biological bases and mechanisms which condition behavior, including anatomy, physiology of the nervous system, etology, genetics and psychophysiology.
● Can characterize the human development in different life stages and in basic functioning.
● Has in-depth knowledge of cognitive and affective functions, and knows personality structures in different theoretical frameworks.
● Knows and understands mechanisms and patterns of human social functioning.
● Can identify symptoms of different mental disorders, is aware of their conditions and methods of influencing people experiencing such disorders.
b) Skills:
● Can establish and maintain contact with another person or a group of people, actively listen and provide feedback.
● Plans the diagnostic procedure, can apply proper methods of psychological assessment and conveys the derived results.
● Has in-depth research skills, which include designing and conducting scientific research.
● Can evaluate the ethical aspect of actions taken on a professional level.
c) Social competences:
● Is aware of the variety of goals and values recognized by people and is able to respect this variety. Treats other people with respect regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, education, social group, religion and culture.
● Can use the obtained knowledge in order to undertake or support innovative and entrepreneurial activities.
● Can apply their psychological knowledge in efforts taken for other people. Can work in groups.
● Can initiate, prepare and guide a discussion, participating in it in a constructive way.
● Understands the necessity for continuous learning and updating the obtained knowledge.
